With the TARTAN Cabinet, the open structure of TARTAN becomes an enclosed volume. Lines of high-density bamboo cross with solid panels, weaving structure and volume together. Open and closed. Structure and surface. Each has its own place.
The doors introduced movement into the TARTAN principle. The hinge becomes part of the knot, allowing the doors to move, but also to be taken out again.
The construction remains readable. You can see where things meet, where they move and how they can come apart again. Nothing is hidden that needs to be understood. Parts can be repaired, replaced or given another life. The cabinet can change without losing its principle.
Lines cross. Shapes appear in between. Repetition turns them into a pattern. Not applied to the surface, but made by the structure itself. A pattern emerges as we weave wood.

TARTAN series
TARTAN takes its name from the traditional Scottish pattern, where threads cross and repeat to form a larger whole. In the TARTAN series, we explore the possibility of ‘weaving’ with wood, simplified to its purest form. Where the wood meets, a knot occurs. From these knots, a structure emerges.
Every structure is made from high-density bamboo and solid brass. The bamboo fibres are compressed under high pressure, creating a dense and durable material. Nothing more than what is needed.
We consider TARTAN a way of building furniture differently. The structures can be taken apart, adapted, repaired and built again. Parts can change while the principle remains. At the end of an object’s life, its materials can be separated and given another life.
TARTAN is ongoing. Taking us further every time. Different objects, different proportions, new possibilities.
